Re-born from the ashes of the *old* Miskatonic, the BBS already based on Mystic BBS software that I had up to 6-7 years ago, also born thanks to the help of Avon of Agency BBS in managing inter-bbs configuration, the custom ANSI arts given to me by Lobo (I think it’s another Mistigris handle) and with the great contribution of xqtr from Another Droid BBS for the implementation of its fabulous add-ons. Unfortunately around 2016, due to an accident, I lost all the configuration, customization work and the result of several sleepless nights to always try to arrive at a new idea that I wanted to put into practice within the BBS: the backups have been lost, and therefore only years later I decided again to put the old project back on track, always fascinated by the world of BBSs, by the people who populate it and try to preserve it despite the hubbub of socials and the low user base.

The old Miskatonic ran on a Raspberry Pi 1B, first model, with the Linux Mystic version of the time. It had several good ideas and goodies, which represented my passion for experimentation as well as many other interests, first of all also interfacing the powerful BASH shell Linux and Python with the BBS, connecting the same to external platforms such as GMail, Telegram, Twitter, etc.

The new Miskatonic BBS was born and grows day after day on an ‘exotic’ platform, certainly less common, even if still Linux-based: the BBS currently runs on a 2018 Huawei P Smart smartphone no longer in use, hosted inside a proot-Debian session inside Termux for Android, which allows you to have a fairly complete Linux environment on your phone. After all, I’ve always preferred the idea of adapting by recycling material that is no longer in use but still more than decent and powerful for this use, given that smartphones have power to spare, by now, and single boards like common Raspberry Pi have reached mind-boggling prices. Furthermore, it was not necessary to have root privileges on the smartphone to host the BBS and configure everything, once I configured the Debian Linux sub-system inside Termux (on Termux base the Mystic BBS executable gave me problems ), and I only had to work around the small inconvenience of not being able to use the default ‘low’ ports for services, such as 23 for Telnet and 22 for SSH, which I translated to 2323 and 2222, which I still think is advisable to do to avoid bot attacks on standard ports.

Another no less important aspect, and which you will obviously find in BBS, is all the experimentation made possible by the low-level Termux APIs to read and use sensors and other ‘mobile’ side components (contact list, SMS, torch, Android notifications, etc. .) directly from BASH Linux and consequently also from the BBS: you will see that it will be possible from the Miskatonic BBS to directly signal own presence with an intermittent mobile phone flashlight, or via a specific script to send a voice message via the Google speech synthesis engine, or still sending an Android notification in real time… the possibilities offered by this unusual Linux-Mystic BBS and Android smartphone combo are endless!

This time I’m trying as much as possible to make the content available on BBSs in Italian, given that unlike the first experience I’m looking for an Italian audience still interested in BBSs, so I hope that some other compatriots will find it of interest.

Also active for a few days (but not yet inaugurated with the first post) is the Gopher server on port 7070 of the same address, as well as the official Telegram channel (link: https://t.me/Miskatonic_BBS) which can be used by the same users directly from Miskatonic BBS.

/// ITALIANO ///
